Comparisons

The start and end points always come from the same series. The rule for choosing the years is given next to each comparison.

  • 2008 → 2010: 558,608.0 → 733,585.0 businesses (+31.3%).
Series: IBGE Business Demography: business births, all active businesses excluding MEI (series ended in 2021). Rule: First available year of the series in SIDRA (2008) and last full year of the second term (2010), in the same series. It covers only part of the second term: the series does not have 2002 to 2007 in SIDRA.

Business Map: businesses opened in the year (includes MEI)

Companies opened in the calendar year, according to the 3rd four-month period bulletin of each year: 2020 (gov-br-download-file-7fbd15), 2021 (gov-br-download-file-65b52d), 2022 (gov-br-download-file-f588a2), 2023 (gov-br-download-file-e3c584), and 2024 (gov-br-download-file-0e8e54). The count includes headquarters, branches, and MEIs. Each value is the one published in that year's own bulletin; the changes published in later bulletins use revised bases (for example, the 2023 bulletin reports a 0.7% increase over 2022, and the ratio between the values of the two bulletins gives 0.8%). For that reason the values remain preliminary and there is no comparison between years in this series. 2025: only the 2nd four-month period is available, which is not an annual result.

Series breaks

mapa-empresas-abertas × ibge-nascimentos-todas-2008-2021: Different bases and definitions: the Mapa de Empresas counts CNPJ registrations, with headquarters, branches, and MEIs; IBGE counts company births in the Cempre and disregards MEIs. They are not spliced or compared in level.

According to IBGE (Business Demography and Entrepreneurship Statistics 2022, published in 2024), MEIs are excluded from the Cempre statistics because most of them are exempt from the administrative records of the Ministry of Labor; from 2005 (published in 2007) through 2021 the survey covered all active companies, and from 2022 it addresses employer companies, with no comparability with the 2007 to 2021 historical series, starting a new series.[10]

Context and interpretation

According to the Mapa de Empresas bulletins, the count of active companies includes headquarters, branches, and individual microentrepreneurs (MEI), does not include companies registered under the Inova Simples special regime, and counts as active MEIs only the registrations with an active status in the CNPJ.[1]

According to the Mapa de Empresas bulletin for the 3rd four-month period of 2020, 3,359,750 companies were opened in 2020 (an increase of 6.0% over 2019) and 1,044,696 were closed, for a positive balance of 2,315,054 and 19,907,733 active companies; 2,663,309 MEIs were opened in 2020.[2]

According to the Mapa de Empresas bulletin for the 3rd four-month period of 2021, 4,026,776 companies were opened in 2021 and 1,410,870 were closed, for a positive balance of 2,615,906 and 18,915,002 active companies; 3,131,851 MEIs were opened in 2021.[3]

According to the Mapa de Empresas bulletin for the 3rd four-month period of 2022, 3,838,063 companies were opened in 2022 (a decline of 4.8% from 2021) and 1,695,763 were closed, for a positive balance of 2,142,300 and 20,191,290 active companies; 2,926,610 MEIs were opened in 2022.[4]

According to the Mapa de Empresas bulletin for the 3rd four-month period of 2023, published on January 26, 2024, 3,868,687 companies were opened in 2023 (an increase of 0.7% over the previous year) and 2,153,840 were closed (an increase of 25.7%), for a positive balance of 1,714,847 and 20,798,291 active companies; 2,887,788 MEIs were opened in 2023.[5]

According to the Mapa de Empresas bulletin for the 3rd four-month period of 2024, 4,254,903 companies were opened in 2024 (an increase of 9.8% over 2023) and 2,436,190 were closed (an increase of 12.1%), for a positive annual balance of 1,818,713 and 22,004,843 active companies; 3,123,969 MEIs were opened in 2024, and MEIs accounted for 73.4% of the companies opened in the year.[6]

According to the Mapa de Empresas bulletin for the 2nd four-month period of 2025, 1,668,753 companies were opened in the second four-month period of 2025, of which 1,257,036 were MEIs, and 942,049 were closed; the country had 24,213,445 active companies, of which 12,660,170 were MEIs.[7]

At the time of the October 2026 collection, the Mapa de Empresas page displayed as highlights 25.7 million active companies, an average company opening time of 23 hours, and 464.5 thousand companies opened in September 2026.[8]

According to the Mapa de Empresas dashboards page, from December 2025 the company opening time data began to reflect the new national CNPJ registration flow implemented by the Federal Revenue Service with the Tax Administration Module, which raised the times recorded; for that reason, comparison with the historical series must take this change into account.[9]

According to IBGE, the birth of an employer company comprises companies with at least one salaried person that began activity in the reference year or resumed it after more than 24 months of inactivity, and also companies that already existed but had no employees for at least 24 months (entry by growth).[11]

According to IBGE, in 2022 there were 405.6 thousand births of employer companies, of which 220.9 thousand (54.5%) were actually born that year and 184.7 thousand entered by growth (45.5%); the birth rate of employer companies rose from 10.9% in 2017 to 15.3% in 2022.[12]

In table 9924 of SIDRA/IBGE, births of employer companies in Brazil were 278,942 in 2015, 252,220 in 2016, 261,302 in 2017, 271,565 in 2018, 304,307 in 2019, 251,005 in 2020, 337,330 in 2021, and 405,563 in 2022.[13]

In table 2718 of SIDRA/IBGE, births of companies in Brazil were 558,608 in 2008, 694,461 in 2009, and 733,585 in 2010; in the following years, 660,893 (2011), 597,165 (2012), 621,773 (2013), 551,289 (2014), 485,368 (2015), 463,749 (2016), 503,212 (2017), 536,020 (2018), 726,527 (2019), 669,651 (2020), and 776,936 (2021).[14]

In the same table 2718 of SIDRA/IBGE, the total number of active companies was 4,077,662 in 2008, 4,268,930 in 2009, and 4,530,583 in 2010, and exits from activity were 719,915 in 2008, 755,154 in 2009, and 736,428 in 2010.[15]
