By warrant of April 22, 2023, Lula, President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, received the Grand Collar of the Order of Camões.[1]

The warrant is dated April 22, 2023 and was published in the Diário da República on May 16, 2023.[2]

According to Observador, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa decorated Lula with the Grand Collar of the Order of Camões at the reception at Belém Palace, on a Saturday morning, in a ceremony in which Lula also decorated Marcelo.[3]

General purpose of the Order of Camões, according to the Chancellery: to distinguish services relevant to the Portuguese language and its projection in the world, to cultural relations among Portuguese-speaking peoples, and to the ties of Portuguese communities with Portugal (this is not the specific rationale for the award to Lula).[4]
